Car Rust Removal and Repairs

Car rust is hard to deal with once it gets started, so it’s important to keep a maintained paint job.  Paint acts as a barrier between your car’s body, moisture, and air.  The most well known spots for rust to appear is right along the wheels and on the front bumper.  This is because over time your wheels will kick up rocks and nick the paint along the wheels and you’ll do the same to people’s front bumper.  Once a little bit of metal is exposed a small chip of rust starts to form and slowly grows.

A fast solution to deal with the small nicks is to put a layer of clear nail polish on it.  This will buy you some time before you need to apply touch up paint.  Before apply touch up paint sand off the rust that is on the nick if there is any.  To do this, put a small piece of sand paper on an eraser and gently rub the rust spot off.  Apply the touch up paint to the area with no paint and nothing more.  Anything else will make your repair look bad.  You can get a clean rag and wash the paint off with water if you slip or need to do it again for some reason.

Rust on car

To prevent rust on your car you should periodically wash the wheel wells of your car.  You can use a high pressure hose like the ones at a self car wash, or you can let a sprinkler set to high spray each wheel for a little bit.  The goal is to erode any clumps of dirt that are starting to gather around the wheels.  You should also keep up with painting knicks in the paint as one small nick can lead to a large patch of hard to remove rust.

Obviously there are times when you can’t remove rust.  Once you let it go too far, you’ll need to find someone who does body work.  They will have to patch it or replace the exterior part all together.  However, rust repair isn’t cheap which is why it is easier to maintain those nicks.

How to prevent and repair rust on cars

The video tells us how to protect cars against rust and informs us as to why they are corroding in the first place.  In this lesson he uses a bottle of rubber underside coating to coat parts of the paint that already started to rust.  It won’t help repair the rust, but it will prevent it from spreading and getting worse without costly repairs.  This coating helps the most in the winter as it protects your body’s paint from salt which helps metals rust even faster.  However, the coating must be applied above 70 degrees, so make sure to do it before fall.  Before applying, make sure to wash your car thoroughly.  Next, shake the can for 3-5 minutes which forces the chemicals to bond together.  Apply the paint liberally while making sure to tape off areas that shouldn’t be sprayed.  Please note, this spray should generally be used in lower spots of the vehicle, especially near the wheel where nicks and chips are more common.
